It is vital that we know God personally, that we do not just know about Him. Knowing about Him won*t change us or what we do but knowing Him will. Daniel 11:32: And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. I was eager to learn the meaning of the word exploits, but I noticed that the word is in italic in my Bible. That means it wasn*t there in the original texts. We can understand that the first part of the verse speaks about individuals who do not know God. They do wickedly. The translators of the Bible knew that those who know God would be different and would do some things differently. They would be strong and they would not do wickedly. Adding the word exploits does not change the meaning of the passage, it clarifies the meaning. I do like one of Webster*s definitions of the word: A notable deed or act. Receiving Jesus into our hearts is the first step to knowing Him and experiencing Him. So, do you know God and are you doing anything that you were not doing before you knew Him? Are you praying and studying your Bible more? Are you sinning less? 2 Peter 1:2: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, Are you getting to know Him better and better and are grace and peace being multiplied to you? 1 Thessalonians 4:1: Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. 2 For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; 5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: 2 Thessalonians 1:7: And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; 10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.John 14:12: Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. Make no mistake about it, we believers do not do greater works than Jesus, but the Holy Spirit who lives in us absolutely will and does. Teachers* Commentary: Greater works than these shall he do* That is, the work of his disciples would be more important after he had gone to the Father than it could be while he remained in the flesh. The apostles would proclaim the message and win disciples not only in Palestine, but also in the Roman Empire, and future believers would spread his truth throughout the world. They would do this because the inspiration (and work) of the Holy Spirit, as Comforter, which he would send them, would be more powerful in their behalf than his own presence with them on earth. Other commentaries said simply that it does not mean greater in quality but greater in quantity. Being a Christian is more than just paying lip-service to the Lord. James 2:18: Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. |
